Bird-watchers flock to Ohio's Lake Erie shoreline

Posted: Updated:

OAK HARBOR, Ohio (AP) - Thousands of bird-watchers are converging on northwest Ohio along Lake Erie for what organizers call "The Biggest Week in American Birding."

The shoreline east of Toledo is filled with migrating birds this week that are flying from Central and South America all the way to northern Canada.

Several hundred species of birds stop at the marshes and rocky shoreline to rest and refuel before flying north across Lake Erie for the summer.

Organizers tell The Blade newspaper in Toledo that they expect 70,000 bird-watchers from across the country and the world to come to Ohio's Lake Erie coast during the 10 busiest days of the migration.

Mark Shieldcastle, research director for Black Swamp Bird Observatory in northwest Ohio, says many visitors are coming for the first time.
