May is National Foster Care Month

Posted: Updated:

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - It's National Foster Care Month and local agencies are working to bring awareness to the half million children in foster care.

On Saturday, the Mahoning County Children Services held a walk and fun day for foster care.

The agency says the children need good adults to foster their growth and guide them until they can be placed back with their families.

"We have a need for foster parents to help with kids age 10 to 18 because we don't have enough homes that are licensed to take that age group and there is a need for it. They need the mentoring and transitioning into adulthood," said Tony Paris, Mahoning County Children Services.

Mahoning County Children Services currently has 37 children in permanent custody of the agency.

To find out more about background checks and how to become a foster parent log onto mahoningkids.com or call the agency at 330-941-8888.
