Brookfield Schools in fiscal emergency

Posted: Updated:

BROOKFIELD TWP, Ohio - The state auditor has declared that the Brookfield School District is in a fiscal emergency.

Superintendent Tim Saxton says he and the school treasurer will be talking to the Ohio Department of Education to set up a date for the first fiscal oversight commission meeting within the next 15 days.

The district is projected to have a $1,018,000 deficit at the end of this fiscal year June 30.

Saxton said he expected it to happen even though they already cut $686,000 in staff and other expenditures this year.

"But it hasn't been enough and we continue to get hit from the state and we're taking cuts that we really have no control over along with charter school operations that unfortunately continue to take tax dollars away from this district," said Brookfield Schools Superintendent Tim Saxton.

The levy was not a factor in the decision, as it could only change next year's forecast.
The school won't know the outcome until the Trumbull County Board of Elections certifies the results May 28.
