Ohio gov eyes efforts to improve seniors' mobility

Posted: Updated:

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Gov. John Kasich says his administration plans to launch a "major" program aimed at preventing older Ohioans from falling, though the specifics of the initiative weren't immediately known.

Speaking at a luncheon Tuesday hosted by AARP Ohio, Kasich said some seniors' pride may keep them from using a walker or a wheelchair.

Bonnie Kantor-Burman, director of the state's Department of Aging, said the agency is evaluating training for seniors and health care workers in preventing falls. She says other details about the initiative will be released in September.

A Kasich spokesman said officials are still exploring the program's cost and who could be targeted by the initiative.

Kasich also floated the idea of having college students volunteer to drive seniors who can no longer safely get behind the wheel.
