Suspect in custody for Austintown home explosion

Posted: Updated:

AUSTINTOWN, Ohio - A man has been arrested in connection with an explosion at a home on S. Turner Road in Austintown Sunday.

Police say they were familiar with the suspect, Shawn M. Villers.

They saw his car on the scene, and he was pointed out in a photo line-up.

The suspect is in jail, but has not been formally charged at this time.

According to our print partner, The Vindicator, a vacant house at 2196 S. Turner Road exploded shortly after 8 p.m. Sunday.

Fire officials believe the explosion was the result of vandalism.

"It looks like someone was trying to steal some copper," said Andy Frost III, Austintown Township fire chief. "They broke off the gas line, and gas filled the house."

The explosion blew the house off its foundation, but that it didn't catch anything on fire.

No one was injured.
