LIBERTY TOWSNHIP, Ohio - A bear was spotted on Tibbets-Wick Road.

The pictures here are from the Liberty Police Department Facebook page.

A township resident sent the pictures of the black bear found in a backyard to the police.

Police say on their Facebook page that they have received calls of bears in the area.

They warn on the page that black bears are non-aggressive and and tend to leave if they know a human is around.

"Black bears are usually fearful of people, therefore bear attacks are a rare occurrence," the Facebook post reads.

In the event of an encounter with a black bear, police suggest you remain calm, avoid eye contact and leave slowly giving the bear an easy escape route. They say running or climbing trees may provoke the bear to make chase.

They also posted the AWARE acronym to remember:

-ACT calm and do not run.

-WARN the bear that you are near; talk in a firm, calm voice.

-ALLOW space between you and the bear. Step aside and back slowly away. Do not make the bear feel trapped or threatened.

-RAISE your hands above your head to appear larger if the bear approaches. Clap your hands or shout to scare the bear away.

-EXIT the area.
