TV Star Ed O'Neill headlines YSU fundraiser

Posted: Updated:

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - It was a night to remember for Youngstown natives who grew up with Ed O'Neill and others who wanted to meet the actor.

O'Neill headlined a fundraiser for YSU's College of Fine and Performing Arts and University Theater. He will also speak at YSU's spring commencement on Saturday morning.

During 21 News anchor Leslie Barrett's one-on-one interview with Ed yesterday, he talked about turning down Modern Family when the creators first pitched the idea. The script wasn't written yet.

About a year later, he received a copy of the script and changed his mind.

ABC had moved on to Craig T. Nelson, but when upfront money became an issue, O'Neill told his manager, that he'd do it for less than his normal quote.

O'Neill told 21 News he was not worried about the money.

"I said we'll do it for less now and we'll get even later. This is a hit show. I knew it from day one and I didn't even know who was in it," O'Neill said.

Watch 21 News on Monday May 20, at 6 and 11 p.m. for Anchor Leslie Barrett's exclusive interview with O'Neill.
