Combative defendant removed from Trumbull County courtroom

Posted: Updated:

WARREN, Ohio - A major disruption at the Trumbull County courthouse after Judge Ronald Rice ordered a defendant removed from his court.

Surveillance video shows Rickey Smith fighting with deputies trying to take him back to the jail.

Smith was maced on the third floor, but continued his struggle outside.

Smith was at an extradition hearing to be taken back to Michigan.

"He was combative the entire way, using obscenities, fighting, trying to struggle the entire way. At one point we had to physically carry him across the street to our jail facility," said Lt. Pete Lucic, Trumbull County Deputy.

Smith's brother, who is a minor, was arrested for allegedly punching a female guard. He has been charged with assault on a peace officer.

One deputy was accidentally maced in the eye while deputies were trying to control the situation.
