Hundreds turn out in opposition to Pa. drilling

Posted: Updated:

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (AP) - More than 500 people packed a public hearing at Lycoming College to voice their opposition to potential drilling for natural gas in Loyalsock State Forest.

The state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources held the meeting Monday night about plans for gas development in the state forest, which stretches over 100,000 acres in Bradford, Lycoming and Sullivan counties.

Opponents of the plan say the land belongs to the people and the wildlife and should not be drilled.

Many expressed concerns about drilling near Rock Run, an exceptional value stream and trout fishery running through the state forest.

State conservation officials say they will consider the public input. No word on when a decision may be reached.
