Suspected 'career criminal' in home invasions takes plea deal

Posted: Updated:

BOARDMAN, Ohio - A man suspected to be a "career criminal" with involvement in a series of home invasions around the Mahoning Valley has taken a plea deal with a Mahoning County court.

Steven Direnzo, 41, was arrested last Tuesday when a stolen vehicle from Canfield was recovered near a laundromat next door to his house on Mathews Road. Police said he was suspected of home invasions in Western Pennsylvania and may be connected to a number of related incidents in Pulaski Township as well.

"We've dealt with him for 15 to 20 years, probably. It seems like every several months we end up arresting him for auto theft, house burglaries, receiving stolen property or drug charges," said Boardman Police Chief Jack Nichols.

In a plea deal, a charge for receiving stolen property was dropped and the charge for tampering with evidence was bound over to the Grand Jury. Direnzo was sentenced to 180 days in jail, with 170 suspended. He was also given a $225 fine and had his driver's license suspended for two years.
