Community comes out for Salem Relay for Life

Posted: Updated:

SALEM, Ohio - The community of Salem came out in full force to celebrate the lives of cancer survivors, provide hope for patients, and remember those who have died.

Cancer survivors were greeted with applause as they took the first lap around Waterworth Memorial Park, for Salem's Relay for Life.

Saralyn Las, a 19-year-old cancer survivor, says the annual overnight event is set up the way it is for a reason.

"It mirrors the walk of the cancer survivor. It starts out in the day time when things are a little bit known, and it goes through the dark like at night, when you don't know what's going to go on. When you hit the dawn you know you're coming out of it," Lash said.

The proceeds go to cancer prevention, research, education and programs for survivors and caregivers.
