Ohio House OKs bill changing dog capture procedure

Posted: Updated:

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - New guidelines regulating how loose dogs can be captured in Ohio are under review.

The measure being considered by state lawmakers sets training and licensing requirements for dog wardens and other officers who use a drug to capture a dog.

Officers must undergo training in the use, storage and record keeping of drugs used in "chemical capture."

Ohio House members voted 94-1 Wednesday to send the measure to the state Senate.

State Rep. Dorothy Pelanda is the sponsor of the legislation. The Republican from Marysville says the guidelines make the capture of dogs more humane.

She says the euthanasia procedure some officers currently follow "can cause stress to dogs."

The bill says dogs must receive a sedative before being put under.
