Senator Sherrod Brown pushes to hire more American workers

Posted: Updated:

WASHINGTON, DC - As the U.S. Senate continues to debate immigration reform, an Ohio senator says he has an amendment that could favor American workers.

Democratic Senator Sherrod Brown's amendment would require businesses to hire better qualified American workers before seeking special visa's for skilled foreign workers.

He says it would force businesses to play by the rules but admits the amendment would be hard to enforce.

"I think most of these companies realize this is what they need to do. There will be exceptions and enforcement problems, but by and large when Congress says if you have an American worker that wants this job and he's qualified you can't get a special visa to hire a foreign worker," said Brown said.

The legislation would also authorize the department of labor to strengthen whistle blower protections for the new visa program.
