Tower improves communications for Niles and Weathersfield safety forces

Posted: Updated:

WEATHERSFIELD TOWNSHIP, Ohio - A new communication system upgrade is providing stronger signals needed for safety forces in two Trumbull County communities.

A new 185-foot tall radio tower system was unveiled Monday in Weathersfield Township.

The township and the city of Niles will both use it for calling on fire and police departments to respond to calls.

A $500,000 federal grant paid for the much needed tower and radio system; money that's not easy for local governments to come by these days.

"When you have two communities coming together, it gets a lot easier to try to get the money, because you're not just getting it for one community," Congressman Tim Ryan says.

The new tower will help reach places where radio signals were weak, including the Eastwood Mall and I-80, near Salt Springs Road.

"We've tried the system throughout the township. We've got great coverage now, where before, we'd have holes constantly in different areas," says Weathersfield fire chief Randall Pugh.

Weathersfield Township Administrator David Rouan says the tower will improve information sharing between dispatchers and mobile units.
