Woman charged after son found stranded on Berlin Lake

Posted: Updated:

BERLIN TWP., Ohio - A Stark County woman is charged with child endangering for allegedly leaving her 6-year-old son unattended in a boat for more than an hour.

31-year-old Erika Blakely of Louisville was arrested by Mahoning County Sheriff's deputies early Friday morning at the Berlin Lake campground off Bedell Road.

Witnesses tell investigators they responded to cries of help at 11:30 Thursday night, and found a young, shivering  boy standing in a boat.

The witnesses say the boy was wet and wearing only a swimsuit.

Deputies say the boy's mother, Erika Blakely arrived at the scene after midnight, claiming she left the child alone for ten minutes, even though deputies had been there for twenty minutes.

The report says that due to the time that the boy was left alone, and the condition in which he was found, Blakely was booked into the Mahoning County Jail on the endangering charge.

After members of the Berlin Fire Department on the scene medically cleared the boy, he was turned over to a relative.
