Manpower an issue for Youngstown traffic cams under Ohio House bill

Posted: Updated:

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - A week after Youngstown City Council gave the green light for traffic cameras in school zones, a vote on the issue is taken in the Ohio House.

On Wednesday House lawmakers approved a measure that would ban local governments from using traffic cams except in school zones.

The bill would allow cameras during recess and opening and closing hours, if a police officer is present.

"I was hoping that we could use the cameras in the school zones and that we can relieve an officer from the school zones and put them back in to the neighborhoods where we were having some problems. So I think we are going to have to revisit the situation to see if it's still feasible for us to do," says Youngstown Councilwoman Janet Tarpley.

The bill still needs to be approved in the Ohio Senate where it is headed for consideration.
