Men, 88 and 96, get belated Pittsburgh diplomas

Posted: Updated:

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Two men who had to leave high school due to extenuating circumstances decades ago have received diplomas from the Pittsburgh Public Schools.

Ninety-6-year-old Nicholas Bruga and 88-year-old Paul Goettler were honored Wednesday night by the district's school board.

Bruga was attending Allderdice High School but was unable to graduate when the St. Patrick's Day flood of 1936 closed the city's schools and delayed its commencement ceremonies. Bruga never returned because he got a job and later enlisted in the Army to serve during World War II.

Goettler was attending Carrick High School but joined the Army in 1943 and was sent to Italy before he could graduate.

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports federal law allows school districts to award diplomas to honorably discharged veterans of World War II, the Korean conflict, or the Vietnam War.
