Posted: Updated:

BERLIN CENTER, Ohio - Firefighters were called to fight a blaze at an oil well this afternoon.

The fire broke out shortly after 5 p.m. at a well on private property on the 14000 block of Leffingwell Road.

Berlin Fire Chief Richard Peppel tells 21 News lightning struck the tank and blew the top off of it.

Dana Meyers tells 21 News she was at the home of her father-in-law when she heard an unusual rumbling noise immediately following the sound of a nearby lightning strike.

Meyers says she could see a plume of black smoke coming from the well behind the home.

The contents of the tank were on fire but then crews surrounded it and put out the fire with water and foam.

No injuries were reported and there is not an estimate on damage costs yet.

Deerfield, Damascus and Ellsworth fire departments assisted Berlin firefighters putting out the blaze.
