Ohio Attorney General investigating Auditor Sciortino arrest

Posted: Updated:

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio Attorney General's office will investigate the controversial traffic stop of Mahoning County Auditor Michael Sciortino.

A Mahoning County Sheriff's Deputy arrested Sciortino for suspected impaired driving on May 26th.  But a less serious charge was filed against the Auditor, and he was driven home that night by a member of the Sheriff's department command staff.

Three members of the Sheriff's staff face disciplinary measures because of the incident.

Sheriff Jerry Greene  and County Prosecutor Paul Gains forwarded the findings of an internal investigation to Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine, seeking his opinion on whether a criminal charge is warranted in the matter.

Jill DelGreco, information officer for the Attorney General, told 21 News on Tuesday that the office has agreed to accept the case, and the information will be turned over to the Attorney General's Special Prosecution Unit.

Sciortino issued a written apology for what transpired as a result of that traffic stop. However, the statement did not include an acknowledgment as to whether or not he had been drinking that night.
