Austintown opposition to economic district doesn't deter mayor

AUSTINTOWN, Ohio - Youngstown Mayor Chuck Sammarone still wants to move forward with negotiations to form a Joint Economic Development District with Austintown.

That's in spite of opposition from trustees who say the city is proposing they provide water services in exchange for a share of an income tax and a profit tax imposed on the Racino and its employees.

Trustee Jim Davis says the profit tax could deter business growth in the township.

The Mayor told 21 News Tuesday that everything is negotiable.

He points out that the issue of a profit tax would be between the city and the company.

"No body has said anything about profit tax or anything else. You start out talking. Period. You negotiate and you put whatever your interested in talking about out on the table . I'm not specifying anything. I'm just saying, now is the chance to look at this to put all the issues on the table and to see if your community will benefit by it," says Youngstown Mayor Chuck Sammarone.

At this time, Penn National and Youngstown say they have not spoken with each other on the matter.

 

Trustee Jim Davis says he has reached out to Penn National and is trying to schedule a time they can meet with both Austintown and Youngstown.
