Coroner updates investigation into man killed in Boardman standoff

Posted: Updated:

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - The Mahoning County Coroner's Office has revealed the results of an autopsy on the body of a man shot and killed by Boardman police.

The report says Daniel A. Fitton, 30, of 817 Cook Avenue, was killed by two gunshot wounds; one to the head and one to the neck.

However the coroner has not made a ruling on Fitton's death, which County Prosecutor Paul Gains has said may have been what's known as suicide by cop.

Negotiators spent hours outside the Cook Avenue apartment attempting to convince Fitton to surrender.

Police made 69 calls to Fitton's telephone during the negotiations.

Ftton became agitated and allegedly fired two shots at police. That's when two Boardman Township police officers returned fire, killing Fitton.

Toxicology results are still pending, and the case remains under investigation.
