Drilling rig up next to Mill Creek Park

BOARDMAN, Ohio - Drivers along Route 224 in Boardman spotted something new on the horizon this weekend.

A drilling rig is located behind a commercial plaza on the south side of Boardman Canfield road, just West of a portion of the park known as Hitchcock Woods.

The work is being conducted by the owner of two existing wells on the site, Ohio Valley Energy Systems of Austintown Township.

Joshua Threet, geologist for Ohio Valley Energy Systems tells 21 News that the rig is in place to insert new pipe into the existing well, and no new drilling is taking place.

Threet says that the company has been collecting mostly natural gas from one rock formation since the original wells were drilled between 2000 and 2002.  Threet says that there is another deposit of energy below the existing formation, and since the well was already drilled, the company is installing the pipe needed to reach the resource.

Threet tells 21 News that since the equipment is taking up parking space behind the building, located at 1111 Boardman Canfield Road, his company is providing valet service to customers of the nearby offices.

Threet says that since the work is being done on existing well, the company was not required to apply for a new drilling permit from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.

Threet says that barring any unforeseen circumstances, the rig should not be in the current location for very long.
