Youngstown Police Department hires 7 new officers, promotes another

Posted: Updated:

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - The city of Youngstown swore in seven new police officers and promoted a 13-year officer.

Officer William Ward, who has been with the police department since 2000, was promoted to Detective Sergeant.

Seven new hires were also sworn in for the department:

  • Hannah Banks

  • Timothy Edwards

  • Brian Ferreri

  • Stephen Gaetano

  • Kenneth Garling

  • Thomas Wisener

  • Daniel Zakrajsek

Among the seven hired, five officers are post-911 veterans. A federal cops grant totaling more than $720,000, will cover the salaries for the veterans for three years.

"It gives the city a little bit of breathing room here while we're trying to work ourselves out of a bad economy," said Police Chief Rod Foley.

Three of the seven new officers will have to attend the police academy before they can be fully utilized in the patrol division.
