New Warren Police Chief gets acquainted with city residents

Posted: Updated:

WARREN, Ohio - The city's new police chief is becoming more acquainted with the people living there.

Monday evening, Chief Eric Merkel introduced himself to community members. At the open meet-and-great, the Chief talked about his plans for the police department.

They include creating a street crime unit to address issues that require additional time and man power.

He also plans to re-introduce a bike patrol unit and to work more closely with the neighborhood watch groups.

"There needs to be a closer bond between the police department and block watch groups because we have 62 officers and can't be everywhere, and we rely on the public to be our eyes and ears when we can't be out there," says Merkel.

The Chief says while he would always like to have more officers on duty, he realizes the city has budget constraints and it is his job to make the department as efficient as possible with the man power he is given.
