Errors in Girard water bills prompts call for closer scrutiny

Posted: Updated:

GIRARD, Ohio  - Mayor Jim Melfi is demanding that the supplier of the city's new water meters more closely inspect  bills after miscalculated bills were issued to businesses and residents last week.

The erroneous statements prompted Melfi to send a letter to Neptune Equipment Co. in Cincinnati. He would like all bills to checked before being sent out.

Melfi said in the letter that the incident brought confusion and embarrassment to the community.

Last week, several water customers complained of incorrect bills that demanded tens of thousands of dollars in payments. Churches like St. Rose Catholic Church was also billed more than expected.

Melfi said he expects the "extra care next time would be of no additional cost" to Girard.
