WaterFire preparations underway

Posted: Updated:

SHARON, Pa. - Preparations are underway for what's being touted as an event that could bring millions of dollars to Sharon over the next three years.

The cultural event on the Shenango River called WaterFire is expected to bring 10,000 people to each event.

Thursday night boaters were on the river practicing for the first of three dates this summer.

Volunteers watched a documentary on how the lighting of the bonfires, art, music and food is said to have helped bring people back downtown to Providence, Rhode Island.

"Providence is now labeled as the creative capital and WaterFire was really the impetus for that transformation," said WaterFire Sharon Executive Director Dayna Sear.

The day long event includes an elaborate lighting ceremony with over 100 torches, performances by fire spinners and opera singers and an outdoor ballroom.

The dates in Sharon are August 3, September 14 and October 12.
