Fracking opponents hope to revive Youngstown amendment

Posted: Updated:

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - Members of the anti-fracking movement are once again pushing to pass a community bill of rights in Youngstown.

The charter amendment would ban gas and oil drilling within city limits. Voters rejected the measure in May by a margin of fifty seven to forty three percent.

Activists like Susie Biersdorfer are canvassing voters to get more than 15-hundred signatures in order to get the measure on the November ballot.

"We have added a new provision that says this prohibition shall not apply to the manufacture of equipment used in pipeplines, fracking, other such industries., says Biersdorfer , "It's only about the sighting of unconventional, horizontal fracking wells within the city of Youngstown."

People opposed of the measure say that the community bill of rights would not be enforceable because under state law, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources has the exclusive power to decide where to license oil and gas wells in the state
