Man robbed and shot, walks to Youngstown police station

Posted: Updated:

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - Investigators are trying to unravel the circumstances leading up the shooting of a man who walked into city police headquarters.

Police say 39-year-old Mark Porter walked into the police department shortly after 8:30 Saturday evening.

Porter, who had a gunshot wound in his back, told officers that he was shot somewhere near the Market Street Bridge after two people pulled up beside him in a car and tried to rob him. Porter said he tried to run away but was shot in the back during his escape. He said he dropped his cell phone while running.

An officer viewed WFMJ's surveillance video, which shows Porter walking down West Boardman Street toward the police department.

Police searched in the vicinity of the bridge and nearby streets looking for his cell phone but did not find it.

Porter is in stable condition at St. Elizabeth's Hospital.
