Governor's plan would speed up I-80 widening project from Austintown to Liberty

Posted: Updated:

TOLEDO, Ohio  - Ohio Governor John Kasich is proposing a plan that he says will speed up highway and bridge construction projects, including one to widen a major valley highway.

The Governor says  that revenue from Ohio Turnpike bonds will be used to fund transportation projects in the northern part of the state over the next two years.

Included in the list of 27 projects are plans to widen I-80 to six lanes from I-680 in Austintown to State Route 193 in Liberty Township.

The Ohio Department of Transportation says that under the Jobs and Transportation Plan, the $116,700,000 project in Mahoning and Trumbull Counties would begin in 2015. Without the plan, the work wouldn't begin until 2027.

A total of 41 projects in Ohio worth $3 billion are being moved ahead, too.

Kasich's recommendations await a vote by the state's independent Transportation Review Advisory Council which is slated for Thursday, July 25.
