June jobless rate rises in Youngstown metro area

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The unemployment rate in the Youngstown Warren Sharon Metropolitan Area rose by half a percentage point last month.

Figures released on Tuesday by the Ohio Department of Jobs and Family Services place the June jobless rate in the metro area at 8.3 percent, compared to 7.8 percent during the previous month.  The June rate one year ago was also 8.3 percent.

The city of Youngstown experienced the highest change in the unemployment rate; rising from 9.7 percent in May to 10.6 percent in June; an increase of nine-tenths of a percent.

In the city of Warren, unemployment increased from 8.2 percent in May to nine percent in June.

Unemployment also increased in each of three valley counties from May to June:

  • Mahoning     7.7 % to 8.3%
  • Trumbull       7.6% to 8.1%
  • Columbiana  7.7% to 8.2%

22,500 people were unemployed in the metropolitan area in June; an increase of 500 from the same period one year ago.
