NILES, Ohio - Two inches of rain in under two hours caused major water runoff in Niles. sewers couldn't keep up with the rain.

Water runoff cascaded through Niles Union Cemetery, over route 46 and into a local neighborhood Tuesday afternoon.

The water was more like a river rolling between two office buildings, at times over a foot deep.

One medical building suffered plenty of water damage. The owner says he just got done putting $28,000 in repairs into the building that insurance didn't cover after a similar storm flooded it last year.

"This is the second time in a year we've been through this and no resolution to the problem obviously. We redid all of our drains here made them a lot bigger and obviously it didn't handle it. We probably have about two feet of water in there," says Dr. Ed Novosel.

Behind the office buildings are several apartment complexes.

People tried to unclog the drains around the Eastwood Arms Apartments but the water came too fast and flooded parking lots and some lower level apartments.

You can still see the water lines around the patio doors of the apartments where it looks like at least a foot of water came in.

One resident was at work when she was told her apartment was getting flooded. "Jane" says, "It looks really wet and smooshy, grime and dirt everywhere. I guess i'm staying at my cousin's house tonight."

Several of the lower level tenants suffered water damage.

The apartment manager says he's working to get carpet cleaning crews in to at least get the majority of the water out of them.

Residents hope something can be done to make sure this type of water runoff from the cemetery doesn't happen again.
