Flaring underway at North Jackson well site

Posted: Updated:

NORTH JACKSON, Ohio - Neighbors living along Blott Road in North Jackson called authorities when they spotted what appeared to be smoke and flames coming from a natural gas well site on Thursday.

However fire crews were quickly  called off when it was determined that the flame was ignited on purpose by company drilling the well.

A spokesperson for Consol Energy, which owns the well, tells 21 news that the flame is from a process known as flaring.  Until a transmission pipe can be connected to the well, drillers burn off the gas emanating from rock below instead of allowing the gas to disperse into the atmosphere.

Consol also says that what appears to be smoke, is actually vapor coming from the well which is being purged with nitrogen to stimulate production.

The spokesperson adds this is a normal process, saying there is no cause for concern.
