Protest at Newton Township injection well

Posted: Updated:

NEWTON TWP., Ohio - An injection well site in Trumbull County was the scene of a protest on Monday afternoon.

The Ohio Highway Patrol received a report before 4 p.m. that 75 people were carrying banners at roads leading to the injection wells in the 5500 block of State Route 5.

21 News spoke with Gwen Fischer of Hiram, Ohio as she was en route to the well site. Fischer said she is protesting because there are 18 injection wells in Portage County, where she lives, and 17 wells in Trumbull County. Fischer says she objects to being the dumping ground for gas and oil companies.

Protest organizers told 21 news reporter Glenn Stevens that they planed to hold an interfaith service at the well site.

State Troopers did not take any action to stop the protest, since the demonstrators were not blocking a state road, but passed the information to the Trumbull County Sheriff's department.
