Columbiana County farm families honored

Posted: Updated:

LISBON, Ohio - As the 168th Columbiana county fair got underway in Lisbon on Monday, two families were on hand to be honored for playing an important part of Ohio's history and its economy.

The Bowman family in Elkrun Township and the Hively family from New Waterford both started farming over 200 years ago.

John Hively's farm is the oldest continuously operating farm in name in Columbiana county.

They started in 1807.  John says his family has been bringing animals to the fair for over 65 years.  "You want your kids and grand kids to experience the farm like and coming to the fair and meeting a lot of great people," says Hively.

John is a sixth generation farmer. For the last four generations his family has raised beef cattle on his one-hundred acre farm in New Waterford.

Hively was thrilled to be honored by the state for what his family has loved to do for generations, saying,  "That was a great honor. To think your parents, grandparents, great grandparents lived there and worked the land it's wonderful."
