Boardman police say suspect tried to run down officer

BOARDMAN TWP., Ohio - Township police are investigating an incident where an officer shot a suspect.

According to a statement from Chief Jack Nichols, at 12:20 a.m. Tuesday, police received a call from the Shell gas station at Shields Road and Market Street reporting that someone was in the parking lot asking customers for money. The chief says the same person was suspected of committing a theft from the store several days earlier.

The suspect, identified as 30-year-old Robert lee Swope, left in a car before police could arrive, but officers caught up with him in a parking lot at Market Street and Route 224 a short time later. It was there that the driver allegedly backed his car into a cruiser, nearly striking an officer who was able to jump out of the way. The report says that the car accelerated forward toward the officer, who fired a shot into the door of the suspect's car.

Police pursued the car along Boardman Canfield Road until they finally came to a stop at the Shell station at Lockwood Boulevard.

Police discovered the car had recently been stolen from Youngstown.

Swope was taken to St. Elizabeth hospital for treatment of a gunshot wound to the lower leg.

Police say they'll consult with the prosecutor before filing charges.
