Noise Barriers going up in Lake Milton

Posted: Updated:

LAKE MILTON, Ohio - People living near a busy highway in Lake Milton complained that it was a little too noisy, so they asked the Ohio Department of Transportation  to do something about it.

So ODOT performed a noise study a couple years ago. "Basically they have noise detectors set up at various locations along the highway. The reading they look for is a decibel. They look for 66 decibel. That's what needs to be hit," says ODOT spokesperson Justin Chesnic.

Many areas scored well above that reading so ODOT plans to construct five different noise barriers along interstate 76 east and west of Lake Milton.

140 homes will be protected by the barriers which will be 10-14 feet tall.  The Project will cost $1.7 million.

Many residents say it's about time.

"You get the dust and the dirt off the road. It's so close to our property we were worried about a truck coming off the road.", says John Laughlin who lives close to the highway. "In the summertime you can't leave your windows down with all the truck noise."

Construction is set to begin next summer.

These will be the first noise walls ever to be built in Mahoning County. Other walls are expected to built along Interstate 680 in 2015.
