Shale boom keeping paving crews busy in Mahoning County

Posted: Updated:

AUSTINTOWN TWP., Ohio - The oil and gas industry is putting Mahoning County Engineers to work.

Engineers say the county has more than doubled it's paving program since drilling jobs have come to the area.

Several major oil and gas companies have agreements in the areas where they are drilling; meaning they will pay for, reconstruct and repave county and township roads.

One company is currently constructing a well-pad on New Road, and plans to pave a portion of Mahoning Avenue, New Road and Lipkey Road.

"They're not just doing the bare minimum repairs, they're going over and above and giving full paving on these roads that they're hauling on," says Mahoning County Engineer Pat Ginnetti.

The company NiSource has done approximately $1.5 million in road and paving projects in Mahoning County, and Halcon has done close to half a million dollars in road repairs.
