DA: Girls, 2 and 5, critical after Pa. shooting

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. (AP) - Authorities say two young girls ages 2 and 5 are in critical condition after a shooting at a northeastern Pennsylvania apartment complex.

Luzerne County District Attorney Stefanie Salavantis says the younger girl is in critical condition Sunday while the other is in critical-stable condition a day after the shooting in Wilkes-Barre.

No arrests have been made but police said the investigation is ongoing.

Salavantis told the Wilkes-Barre Times Leader (http://bit.ly/16A190Q ) on Sunday that both girls appear to have been staying in the apartment where the shooting happened.

Salavantis declined to discuss the investigation in detail, saying she did not want to jeopardize authorities' efforts.

Two young girls were wounded, one critically, in a weekend shooting at an apartment complex in northeastern Pennsylvania, police said.

Investigators released few details of Saturday's shooting, including the ages of the victims, but witnesses told the Scranton Times-Tribune the girls appeared to be around 2 years old.

No arrests have been made, Wilkes-Barre Police Lt. Marcella Lendacky said Sunday.

Brian Lee, 34, who lives in an adjacent apartment complex, told the newspaper he heard screaming and ran to see what was happening.

"I saw the cops carrying a little girl. They put her down, trying to do CPR on her. Then they carried another kid down," Lee said.

The children were flown to Geisinger Medical Center in Danville and one was listed in critical condition Saturday night, officials said. The other victim was described as stable. Lendacky said Sunday that there have been no updates to the girls' conditions and their names and ages haven't been released.

The Times-Tribune reported that county 911 broadcast an all-points bulletin for a vehicle that may have been connected to the shooting. A vehicle matching that description was pulled over less than an hour later, but Lendacky said Sunday afternoon that no arrests have been made and the investigation is continuing.
