Indians entering crucial summer stretch

Posted: Updated:

CLEVELAND (AP) - At times, they don't look anything like a playoff team, but the Cleveland Indians are right in the thick of the AL wild-card chase.

The key now is to stay there.

And if the Indians have any desire to still be playing in October, they'll have to survive a daunting upcoming schedule that includes three games in Atlanta and three in Detroit before a 3-game series at home against Baltimore, 1 of the teams Cleveland is fighting for a spot in the postseason.

Indians manager Terry Francona has continued to preach his day-at-a-time mantra to his players, but it's tempting to look ahead at a crucial stretch that could define the season.

On Sunday, the Indians overcame four errors and somehow beat the Minnesota Twins 3-1. They can't afford any sloppiness in the next week or their playoff hopes may vanish.
