YSU community commemorates 50th anniversary of MLK speech

Posted: Updated:

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - People in Youngstown joined others around the country in celebrating the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and a renewed call to action.

Youngstown State University students and the community commemorated the 50th anniversary of King's "I have a dream" speech on campus.

Attendees watched the events on the National Mall as President Obama spoke from the same spot where King pleaded Americans come together to stomp out racism in 1963.

"I can recall as a child when Dr. King gave his speech. I was in Dallas Texas watching it on TV. I can recall the times I couldn't go to fountain because of the color of my skin. I couldn't go to certain schools because of the color of my skin," says Sylvia J. Ilmer, interim director of diversity and multicultural affairs.

The President urged those watching to become modern-day marchers for economic justice and racial harmony.
