Report: Ohio kidnapper called victim's mother

Posted: Updated:

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - A spokeswoman for the city of Cleveland and its police department says records pertaining to deceased kidnapper Ariel Castro are being reviewed to determine what will be made public under Ohio law.

Maureen Harper says the city isn't the source of a video that aired Friday on NBC's "Today" show in which Castro confessed that he used the cellphone of one of his captives, Amanda Berry, to call her mother.

The spokesman for the Cuyahoga County prosecutor, Joe Frolik, also says the office didn't release the recording.

The video also shows Castro saying authorities missed opportunities to catch him while he held the three kidnapped women in his run-down home.

Castro was a month into his life sentence when he hanged himself in his cell Tuesday night.
