Girard school recognized for a century of education

Posted: Updated:

GIRARD, Ohio - A Catholic school in Trumbull County will receive honors for a century of service.

The Trumbull County Commissioners will present a proclamation to Saint Rose School in Girard.

The proclamation recognizes the longevity of Catholic education in the city as the parish school celebrates it's 100th anniversary.

The presentation will take place at 2:00 p.m. Thursday in the school gymnasium.

According to the parish web site, Saint Rose Catholic School consists of two separate buildings: the "old building" and the "new building."

The first building was built and opened in 1913. The first graduating class of the 1913 - 1914 school year consisted of five boys and one girl.

The new building, which opened after 1958, is situated right next door and connected by a short underground tunnel.

The old building used to house the junior high classes of 7th and 8th graders until the late 1980's when attendance began to severely decline. Since then, all homerooms are located in the new building.

The Ursuline sisters' convent is located on the third floor of the new school building, but is now a science lab and library.
