Safe Zone training for LGBT students in Youngstown

Posted: Updated:

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - Community educators and mental health advocates are hoping to create a safer place in schools for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender students.

Help Hotline hosted Safe Zone training at the Trumbull County Mental Health and Recovery Board.

The program was first launched at Youngstown State University to help school employees, clinicians and members of local libraries know more about the issues facing students in the LGBT community.

"We want to make sure that people who are working with students or within the community have the tools and the language and the knowledge and the empathy that's necessary to be able to help those individuals who may be struggling with their identity," says Brian Wells.

Wells say those struggling with their identity are four times more likely to contemplate suicide.

He encourages anyone experiencing those thoughts to call Help Hotline at 211.
