CANFIELD, Ohio - Retired boxer Kelly Pavlik did not appear before a judge in Mahoning County Court Tuesday, but instead had his attorney file a written plea of not guilty.

Pavlik is charged with theft for allegedly refusing to pay a $25 taxi fare.

"A" Cab owner Brian Bleggi tells 21 News his employee picked up Pavlik from a bar on Meridian Road shortly before 3 a.m. last Wednesday.

When he was dropped off at his home, Pavlik allegedly refused to pay the cab driver.

Pavlik told 21 News that he feared for his safety, claiming that the cab driver was driving erratically and passed by his home three times.

Pavlik was arrested last Friday for failing to show up for an earlier scheduled court appearance on the charge.

Pavlik claimed he was unaware of the hearing.

A pretrial in the case is scheduled for November 8.
