Columbus Police HQ evacuated after emergency call

Posted: Updated:

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Police say a report of an explosion that triggered the evacuation of the Columbus Police Department headquarters Tuesday night was related to a nearby construction project.

The police department said on Twitter that the department's headquarters was all clear and reopening early Wednesday morning.

A Columbus Fire Department official says a caller reported an explosion at about 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. There were no injuries.

Several emergency responders were dispatched to the scene in downtown Columbus. The building is located in a business district, a few blocks from the Ohio Statehouse.

The Columbus Dispatch reports a stretch of the street where the police headquarters is located was blocked following the incident.

A police public information officer did not immediately return phone messages.

The police department's non-emergency and 911 lines were not affected.
