Youngstown African American leaders blast county Democratic party chairman

Posted: Updated:

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - Leaders of the African American community held a press conference on Wednesday to address what they say are threats and attacks made by the Chairman of the Mahoning County Democratic Party.

They accuse Dave Betras of alienating African Americans from the party by eliminating three members of the executive committee as they openly support an independent candidate for Mayor Demaine Kitchen.

"This recent attack on our leaders in the party is an offense to our community giving the appearance that we have no right or choice in this matter, that we must subject ourselves to what we are being told to do with consequences if we do not fall in line," says chairman of the Community Mobilization Committee Rev. Kenneth L. Simon.

Mahoning Democratic Party Chairman Dave Betras was in Columbus, but released statement, claiming that his actions have nothing to do with race, only party affiliation.

The Chairman of Ohio's Democratic Party, Chris Redfern issued a statement supporting Betras.
