Youngstown BBB warns of healthcare scams

Posted: Updated:

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - With open enrollment for the Affordable Care Act now underway, consumer advocates are warning consumers that scam artists are ready to capitalize on potential confusion.

The Better Business Bureau chapters across the country are warning consumers about healthcare-related scams.

"We have seen the same type of scam going on in this area," Melissa Ames says, spokesperson for the Youngstown Better Business Bureau.

"What they're doing is they're calling customers at home, using the name Obamacare and really starting to frighten people."

Ames says her office has received calls from seniors recently. She says they tell her the scam artists claim they ask for personal and financial information for Affordable Care cards, but she says those cards don't exist.

Whether the scam arrives via mail, email or over the phone, Ames advises you hang up or delete the message.

"If you are solicited for your personal information, really let that be a red flag to you and understand that this is a possibility it's a scam," Ames says.

Additional BBB Tips:

  • Keep your personal information to yourself. Don't give out your date of birth, Social Security number, bank account or credit card information.
  • Don't trust caller ID. Scammers can use technology that lets them display information from your screen.
