YSU trustees select manager to beef up enrollment

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - Youngstown State University's trustees hope their newest hire will raise the university's enrollment numbers.

On Wednesday night, the board approved Gary Swegan to be the Associate Vice President of Enrollment Management at YSU.

Swegan is currently serving in the same position at Bowling Green University.

"While many people are involved in the work of enrollment, there really does have to be one 'guru' if you will, who coordinates all these efforts, who's able to track data very carefully on a daily, real-time basis, and it's why we determined we needed to move forward with a person in this position," says YSU President Randy Dunn.

YSU's highest enrollment was 15,000 students, but over the past three years it has declined.

In the past two fiscal years, YSU has lost $16 million in revenue due to decreased enrollment and state allocations. This current fiscal year, tuition/enrollment revenue and state funding are down an additional $4.2 million
