Horses removed by Mercer humane investigators

Posted: Updated:

MERCER, Pa. - The Humane Society of Mercer County has removed eight horses from property on Symons Road on Sunday after two of the animals died.

Humane Society officer Tom Swartz tells 21 news that the horses were living in conditions he described as deplorable and hazardous.

The owner of the horses, Nicole Rust says that after being unable to pay for new hay and mounting veterinarian bills, she reached out to the humane society for help.  Rust says she did not think they would take any of the horses away.

Rust, who owns a total of 21 horses, told 21 News last week that she feared that someone may have tried to poison some of the animals.

The humane society officer says the removal is part of an ongoing investigation.
