Austintown working on deal to improve ambulance service and fire protection

Posted: Updated:

AUSTINTOWN TOWNSHIP, Ohio - The Austintown Fire Department and Lane LifeTRANS are working on a public/private partnership with the goal of enhancing Emergency Medical Service in the township.

A news release issued by the township on Monday, says the township will provide a Firefighter/ Emergency Medical Technician to partner with a Lane's paramedic on board a Lane's ambulance. The ambulance will be housed in a fire station and only respond to emergencies in Austintown.

In the event of a structure fire the Firefighter/ Emergency Medical Technician will become an active Firefighter. The ambulance will be under the direct supervision of the Fire Chief and Lane's management.

The release says that the additional Firefighter/EMT will be on duty seven hours a day, 24 hours per week at no cost the taxpayers. Lane's will reimburse the township for all of the labor costs incurred by the Firefighter/ Emergency Medical Technician. However, Lane will still bill as they have in the past for ambulance service.

The release says the arrangement is designed to provide better emergency medical service at all times and an additional firefighter at major structure fires. Because Lane provides ambulance service for many of our surrounding communities the township wanted to insure that an ambulance is dedicated to staying in Austintown with the sole purpose to respond to our residents needs. At the same time the additional Firefighter on duty will provide additional firefighters on the scenes of major incidents.

A final agreement has yet to be worked out. They hope to start the new venture at the beginning of 2014.
